About James (Jim) Motes
I moved to Portland around 2010 with my first wife, Kristy. At the time, I was teaching in Guilford, but studying to be an administrator at UConn (taught by the legend himself, Mr. Lou Pear!). I was very fortunate to intern at Portland High School and Middle School from 2008-2010, and learned first-hand about the schools and the dedicated teachers, administrators, and staff members.
My daughter Erica was born in 2012, and although her mother and I split up a few years later, we remained very good friends because our principal focus was on keeping our daughter safe and happy.
In 2012, I took a position as Principal of Classical Magnet School in Hartford, immersing myself in the challenging and intensive world of administration. After two years, I chose to return to the classroom, and soon returned to teach in Old Lyme for the next eight years.
In 2016, I met my wife, Brittany, and we were married two years later. A year after that, Charlie Ray was born, and three years later along came Violet. And from 2020-2024, we hosted four au pairs, including Laura (pictured here with everyone picking strawberries at Gotta’s!).
In 2019, about a month before Charlie Ray was born, I took the LSAT’s and then enrolled at UConn Law School in the evening division. I focused on family law, educational law, and public health law. Four years later, I graduated with my J.D., retired from teaching, and started my second career as a family law attorney.
I spent nearly five years as the Chairman of the Portland Ethics Commission. I am now the Cubmaster of Portland Pack 2, working with some amazing volunteer parents. I just rejoined the Colchester Continental Fife and Drum Corps, and hope to perform for the Portland 250 Ceremony next summer.
Portland is not my first home, but my wife and I believe it is our forever home. We love being a part of this community, and hope to find many more ways to get involved and help our town and our schools to grow and thrive.
